Does IP Video Distribution Really Cost Less?

Evaluating AV Distribution for Hospitality Venues: AVoIP vs. HDMI

In the hospitality industry, creating an impressive audiovisual experience is paramount. Whether you’re operating a bustling restaurant, sports bar, or arcade, the ability to efficiently and effectively distribute video content across multiple screens is essential. The choice between traditional HDMI-based systems and modern AV over IP (AVoIP) solutions is a pivotal one for AV integrators and venue operators alike. This choice can significantly impact not only cost but also the ease of scalability and future-proofing of your audiovisual setup.

Understanding the Debate

http://isw.designThe debate between HDMI and AVoIP systems often centers on purported benefits such as cost savings and reduced complexity. However, it’s important to delve deeper to understand whether these claims hold true under scrutiny or if they are merely marketing tactics. At ISW we were curious enough to create a thought experiment to really understand the impact.

Setting the Stage: Essential Variables and Constants

For the comprehensive examination, two parallel distribution scenarios were constructed: one utilizing HDMI and the other using AVoIP. Both setups aimed to distribute AV content to 60 screens, and several constants were applied to ensure a fair comparison. These include a video quality standard of 4K60FPS 4:4:4, the use of Powersoft Unica for audio channels, and AV sources like Apple 4K TVs and BrightSign media players. Cabling was consistent across both systems, employing Belden 10GXF CAT6A.

The Intricacies of HDMI Video Distribution

Traditional HDMI video distribution can be cumbersome. In the setup studied, the system comprised four AV Pro Edge 16×16 4K HDMI matrix switches, each intricately connected through a vast network of cables and distribution amplifiers. The need for substantial rack space and extensive components translates into higher costs and less flexibility for future expansion. This architecture, while reliable, requires navigating bulky equipment and complex configurations, highlighting a key downside to HDMI solutions.

AVoIP Video Distribution: The Modern Approach

In contrast, AVoIP embodies a streamlined, efficient distribution method. Utilizing a single, compact control box from AVPro Edge’s MXNet Evolution II ecosystem, alongside network switches, the complexity and physical space requirements are dramatically reduced. This modular approach not only simplifies the setup but also enhances scalability. Encoders and decoders integrated into this system efficiently handle signal routing, enabling easy adjustments and upgrades without major hardware overhauls.

Cost Analysis: HDMI vs. AVoIP

Cost is a significant consideration in choosing an AV distribution system. For 60 displays, AVoIP systems prove to be 35.37% cheaper than their HDMI counterparts. The distinction grows clearer when considering the scalability and reduced hardware needs of AVoIP. However, in smaller setups with only 16 displays, HDMI may offer marginally lower costs—though this comes with trade-offs in flexibility and scalability. The reduced initial cost of HDMI can quickly escalate if expansion becomes necessary.

Beyond Initial Costs: The Flexibility Factor

While initial costs are critical, flexibility and future-proofing are equally vital. AVoIP systems excel in these areas, allowing straightforward expansion as business needs evolve. Additional displays can be integrated without extensive alterations or additional high-cost hardware, unlike HDMI systems, which often require entire new matrix switches, amplifiers, and associated wiring. This inherent adaptability is a major selling point for AVoIP, as it seamlessly accommodates additional systems like CCTV, Wi-Fi, and point-of-sale integrations without a hitch.

Concluding Thoughts: The Case for AVoIP

Despite initial apprehension from some AV professionals about embracing AVoIP due to perceived complexity, the benefits are undeniable. AVoIP systems provide the cost efficiency, scalability, and adaptability that businesses need in today’s fast-paced environment. Clients are mostly concerned with solutions that are economical and adaptable to changes, and AVoIP effectively meets these demands.

While both HDMI and AVoIP have their specific advantages, ISW’s analysis makes a compelling case for AVoIP in larger installations. The flexible, future-ready nature of AVoIP systems makes them the ideal choice for hospitality venues keen on innovation and growth, ultimately making it the smarter investment for a dynamic audiovisual future.
